Maybe it’s coincidence, but since 2008 when the smoking ban took effect in France, cafes and restaurants seem to have more children in them. It is now fairly common to see couples sharing a drink with friends with a baby in tow, of digging into steak frites with a toddler in their lap.

The poussette Café is a safe haven for parents who want to get out of the house with babies and small children without worrying about them fussing, crying or needing to be breastfed. The founder has thought of everything. There is plenty of space between tables for strollers, shelves of toys and designer childrens’ cloting available for purchase, and a changing table is set up in the toilet.

Toddlers can be let loose in the little play corner guarded by a big stuffed crocodile, and on one will bat an eyelid if your baby decides to demonstrate his best screaming voice.

As for parents, they get tot take prenatal singing or infant massage classes, or simply sit and swap child-rearing tips with other customers.

It’s open all day Tuesday to Sunday, serving colourful salads and soups, tarts and cakes, delivered fresh by a local caterer, and of course, age-appropriate dishes for the small fry.

Le Bal

Located down the tiny Impasse de la Defense off the bustling Avenue de Clichy in the 18tharrondissement, the building at number 6, Le Bal, currently serves as a multi-purpose venue for the arts. Le Bal focuses specifically on the ?document-image,? encompassing photography, video, film and new media as a means of representing reality. But you can also get a drink or a light meal at Le Bal Café.

The Building

In the roaring twenties, a popular dance hall called Chez Isis stood in this spot. After the dancing subsided, it lived on as France?s top betting center until 1992. After years of abandonment, the building was bought by the city of Paris in 2006 and plans for the current Le Bal venue went into action.

A young team of talented architects created a modern, functional space with exhibits flowing naturally into one another. The café and the bookstore open out onto the cobblestone path with a colorful children?s playground behind it.

The Café

The space has a very modern black and white décor with low hanging lights. Small rectangular shelves filled with glasses, wine bottles, and teapots line the wall behind the bar.The menu is seasonal and has a British twist, thanks to former Rose Bakery chefs Alice Quillet and Anna Trattles.

5/ Bar 61, 3 Rue de l’Oise, 75019 Paris

A friendly bobo cafe with a permanent photo exhibition depicting bars around the world. The terrace, opposite a specatular graffiti wall, is the perfect suntrap at lunchtimes. It has a discerning wine selection and probably the best tartines grillées (toasted open sandwiches) in Paris.

6/ Ô77, 77 quai de la Seine, 75019 Paris

This former bicyle repair shop is now a restaurant run by a welcoming Lebanese family team of uncle and niece, who mix their own and traditional French food in a trendy lounge atmosphere. Friendly service, big salads, an a good selection of organic French beers, including one that contains a (legal) dose of hemp.

7/ AICV Location vélos, 38 bis quai de la Marne, 75019 Paris

If you can’t be bothered with the red tape involved in Paris’s Vélib’ rentabike scheme, this is a traditional cycle-hire palce. Get a two-wheeler for three hours for 6-8 Euro and either pedal down the canal path to Bastille, or head northwards through vast parc de la Villette, and out into the suburb of Pantin.

8/ Dépôt Flandre, 63 quai de la Seine, 75019 Paris

This quirky bric-à-brac warehouse is open seven days a week and purveys everything from Pernod water jugs to bistro tables.

The bassin used to be just a disused canal basi, frequented by ducks, drug addicts and the occasional daring jogger.

Now its historic raisable bridge is newly renovated, its industrial buildings have been spruced up, and it’s one of Paris’s hippest meeting places :

1/ Antipode , face au 55 quai de la Seine, 785019 Paris

This is one of three big barges moored in a line along the western bank, all offering similar fare – drinks and light meals on deck, a show down below. They’re great places to sit and watch the evening promenaders, an there are concerts and cabaret, including shows for kids, at 5-7 Euro a ticket.

2/ MK2 Cinemas, 14 quai de la Seine & 7 quai de la Loire, 75019 Paris

This twin neon-lit cinemas, one either side of the canal, were pioneers, opening in 1996 when the “quartier” was more like something out of Scorsese than Truffaut. The glass-and-iron buildings programme a healthy mix of arthouse movies and blockbusgters, and if the film you want to see is on the other bvank, just hop on the little shuttle boat.

3/ Bar Ourcq, 68 quai de la Loire, 75019 Paris

This cafe is the cool de la cool on the canalside, its turquoise facade a beacon for bobos young and old. It offers free bar snacks and also lends pétanque sets to anyone willing to risk getting their toes squelched by flying cannonballs.

4/ La Rotonde, 6-8 place de la Bataille de Stalingrad, 75019 Paris

This 18th century former tollhouse for canal traffic was abandoned for years. It has finally been renovated and now houses a hip but affordable restaurant and bar with chic brasserie foor indoors and a huge terrace on the square. In summertime it’s great to have drink there on sunday afternoons.

Paris … Markets

Published in Condé Nast traveller Insider Europe January 2013 by Natasha Edwards :

Wherever you are in Paris, there’s a food market nearby: the city has more than 90 of them, each with its own character and style. At weekends, even in snooty quartiers such as Auteuil and Trocadéro, Parisians grab their baskets and head to the market. It’s a social occasion and a comfirmation of how important food is to French culture. Most marchés are outdoors, and held two or three mornings a week; on some streets they are open all day, usually with a long lunch break.

Here are four of the best :

In western Paris, Marché Président Wilson (Wednesday and Saturday mornings) occupies much of the central promenade on the av. of the same name, with the Musée d’Art Moderne on one side and the gardens of Musée Galliera on the other. Like the area, it’s upmarket and its undoubted star is Joël Thiébault, whose vast stall is piled high with giant lettuces, huge bundles of carrots, beetroot and herbs. He supplies many of the city’s leading chefs with produce grown at Carrières-sur-Seine, just 15 km from Paris. As well as cultivating rare French varieties of vegetables, notably carrots, he has now branched out into mibuna, shungiku and all sorts of other mysterious Asian leaves.

The young bobo families of Batignolles district flock to the Marché Biologiques des Batignolles (saturday 9am-3pm), an organic market on Boulevard des Batignolles. It is wholesome, earthy, even educational: there is a pen of geese and farmyard animals that draws a crowd of small children. The stalls are great for vegetables, homemade jams, organic fish and meat, and goat’s cheese that look as though they have come straight from the farm.

Under the trees of Place Monge in the Latin Quarter is a compact and select market, most unlike the touristy one on nearby rue Mouffetard. For locals, the big attraction of the Marché Monge (Wednesday, Friday and Sunday mornings) is its many food producers’ stalls. There’s a specialist in Alpine cheeses and mountain hams, and a charcutier whose huge selection usually includes a steaming vat of choucroute. This is also a good market for locavores thanks to several organic market gardeners from the Ile de France and a supplier of wonderful apples from Picardy.

Near Bastille on rue d’Aligre, the Marché Beauvau is famous across Paris for its low prices and the banter of its stallholders. Next door, the covered market has good butchers, an Italian deli, and a stall with a couple of tables serving Corsican produce. There’s also a small, outdoor fleamarket on Place d’Alligre, the only one in central Paris.

(Near the Romantic Paris Apartement, Friday evening you can shop at a small organic market at Place Anvers. You can find a nice goat’s cheese stall, some butchers, a fish stall and a lot of vegetable stalls )

Until 20/01/2013 . I tried to persuade one of our friends to visit this exhibition because he’s using the aborigine art as an inspiration for his photographic work. I hope he will get there before closing time .

“The exhibition presents for the first time in Europe a major artistic movement, born in 1971-1972 in the community of Papunya, at the heart of the central Australian desert.

By transposing to recycled wooden panels the motifs employed in ephemeral ritual paintings, the Aborigine artists of Papunya created an astonishingly inventive formal art, saturated with meaning. These works change the manner of understanding the territory and conceiving the history of Australian art.

With more than 160 canvases and almost 100 objects and photographs from the period, the exhibition presents the iconographical and spiritual sources of the Papunya movement and traces its development from the first panels to the large canvases of the early 1980s.” extract from the site musée du Quai Branly

I just read the last newsletter of Do it in Paris.com and found an interesting restaurant, because I also like to hang out at Mama Shelter.

Starck?s incredible new restaurant at the Flea market Ma cocotte ! It?s the name of the brand new dining room designed by Starck that is opening its doors at the Paul Bert market.

Careful ! This is a preview of the most welcoming restaurant that is sure to be the new trendy hot spot this Winter.

An XXL place on two levels with an open kitchen on the high communal table, several dining corners where all the furniture was picked up second hand, cutlery from all horizons, vintage bowls, old floor tiles.

On the menu. A divine vintage cuisine: fresh velvety soup with mint green peas, eggs mayo for saucing, an incredible shepherd?s pie, spit-chicken and fries. And then a killer rice pudding with caramel and poached pears!

We love? hanging out in the divine « Starck » atmosphere of Coorniche or Mama Shelter with a flea market and vintage touch!

Claire Morgan’s Quietus until november 3th at Galerie Karsten Greve

My husband went over there last Thursday and was really overwhelmed by the beauty, simplicity vs. complexity of her work. He want me to go to Paris only for this exhibition.

A little bit of googling and I found this on untappedcities.com written by Kala Barba-Court

”Tucked in a little street just off Rue de Turenne in the 3eme arrondissement is the Galerie Karsten Greve, where the mixed media installations and canvases of London-based artist Claire Morgan are currently on exhibit. I?ve been a fan of Morgan?s work for some time now, and out of sheer excitement I found myself at the gates of the gallery way before opening time (the gallery opens at 10am, by the way).

In her second solo show Morgan?s work delves into the desperation ? through life and death ? of our want and need for control of the world around us.

?Nipple?, thistle seeds, bluebottles, nylon, lead, acrylic

In the words of the artist: ?My attention has been drawn to the cheap distractions we choose to place in our immediate vicinity, with which to screen us from the overwhelming facts: that we are nothing; that our only certainty as individuals is a life, of unspecified duration, and then death.?

?The Beauty and the Beast? (middle), blue bottles, morpho butterfly, nylon, lead, acrylic

Morgan uses thread, bees, flies, butterflies, seed heads and shreds of plastic for her installations, as well as performing the taxidermy for her pieces herself. ?The Colossus?, hanging in the main hall of the gallery, is constructed from over 50,000 torn plastic fragments meticulously threaded to form a huge sphere. A taxidermy mute swan is visible from a gap in the middle, its wing tip peeking out from the top. It evokes a feeling of being overwhelmed, a reminder of something greater than us.

?The Colossus?, torn polythene, a taxidermy mute swan, nylon, lead, acrylic

In ?The Heart of Darkness (II)? she uses blue bottle flies strung through nylon to form a cube. The breathtaking ?The Birds and the Bees? explores the ?betrayal of beauty and all that goes with it? ? a pair of taxidermy blackbirds are enclosed in a circle of honey bees, army-like.

?Heart of Darkness (II)?, bluebottles, nylon, lead, acrylic

?The Birds and the Bees?, honey bees, taxidermy blackbirds, plant pigment (saffron), nylon, lead, acrylic

In the final space of the exhibit, isolated in a little room, is ?Terminal?. It is a piece that articulates, with torn pieces of white plastic and a taxidermy herring gull, the end of everything : human, action, and velocity.

?Terminal?, torn polythene, taxidermy herring gull (juvenile), nylon, lead, acrylic

Also in the exhibit are Morgan?s painting studies, her canvases smeared with blood and preservatives from the process of taxidermy. These are her two-dimensional studies and sketches, which she calls ?blood drawings?.

Whether or not you are interested in installation art, this exhibit will be able to draw out a reaction from you, and will make you question all that you deem important and fleeting.

The way everything intersects but never touches and the cyclical theme of each piece makesQuietus one of the best collections I?ve seen, hands down. If there is one exhibit to see before the year ends, it is this. Through her art, Morgan succeeds at showing us that these flies, bees, blackbirds, swans and torn plastic balanced precariously on nylon string are, surprisingly, very much like ourselves : human, terrifying, and staggeringly beautiful.

Quietus runs from September 8 to Novemer 3, 2012

Galerie Karsten Greve, 5, Rue Debelleyme, 75003 Paris, M° Saint Sebastien-Froissart

Paintings by Edward Hopper (1882-1967) have the deceptive simplicity of myths, a sort of picture-book obviousness. Each one is a concentrate of the hypothetical knowledge and dreams conjured up by the fabulous name of America. Whether they express deep poignancy or explore figments of the imagination, these paintings have been interpreted in the most contradictory ways. A romantic, realist, symbolist and even formalist, Hopper has been enrolled under every possible banner. The exhibition at the Grand Palais seeks to shed light on this complexity, which is an indication of the richness of Hopper?s oeuvre.

Thats how the site of Grand Palais starts its explanation about the painter. His paintings are hyperrealistic, yet it’s as you see them in a dream.

Translated from an article that I read on www.evous.fr

The place to go for real good crêpes is the quartier de Montparnasse . It’s the most “Breton” place of Paris.
Si vous avez une suggestion pour une bonne crêperie à Paris, n?hésitez à laisser un commentaire.

La crêperie Josselin à Montparnasse is the place to go, but as all good adresses, it’s always full.

Le Petit Morbihan à Montparnasse, 20 rue d?Odessa, 75014 Paris

Le Breizh Café, Le Marais, one of its crêpes brings you to Brittany. They got the price “Fooding d’Honneur 2010″

Crêperie Suzette, 24 rue des Francs Bourgeois, 75003 Paris, among the best in Paris.

La Crêpe Dentelle,10, Rue Léopold Bellan, 75002 Paris

Mouette à Bord, 102 rue du Théâtre, 75015 Paris

La Galette du Moulin sur la butte Montmartre, 1 Rue Véron 75018 Paris – tel 01 42 23 74 16

142 Crêperie Contemporaine, 59 rue St Charles, 75015 Paris

La Crêperie des Pêcheurs, Rue Saint-André des Arts
It’s one of the best in the Rue Saint-André des Arts

Aux Meilleures Crêpes de Paris, Grands Boulevards, on the go

Try the crêpe with caramel and salted butter.

Crêperie Bretonne Fleurie…, 67 rue de Charonne, 75011 Paris
Very classic, but great

“Where else but Paris can a kid ride on an extinct beast? On the ?Dodo Manège? carousel in Paris? Jardin des Plantes they can ride on not only a dodo or a triceratops, but also a horned turtle (tortue à cornes), a glyptodon, a thylacine, or a sivatherium. There are also a few non-extinct animals (panda, elephant, ostrich, gorilla) on this carousel concerned with the evolution of species.

The carousel is beautifully painted with a jungle scene and 12 individual vignettes (around its top) showing some fascinating animals like lemurs, pangolins, and armadillos, as well as scenes from the Jardin des Plantes itself.”(from itinerantprofessor.blogspot.com)

Twenty years ago Jean-Jacques Harel made this carousel for his 2 year old son. He is a photographer specialised in animals and worked for the Museum of Natural History, but he is also an expert on extincted animals.

From the blog : parisbymouth

Chef Bertrand Grébaut climbed the ranks at L?Arpège before going on to earn a star of his own at Agapé at the tender age of 27. He was awarded a 10,000? grant from Evian-Badoit to realize his vision for Septime, where he said he wanted to ?democratize? haute cuisine. The 26?, three-course lunch menu goes a long way to reach this goal, and so does the warm but professional service. Expect beautiful, seasonal cooking, pristine ingredients, and a fine list of natural wines to match.

Before becoming a bistro it was actually a fish shop and to keep the memory of this, the facade has stayed the same with its tiled mosaics, which is still very apt considering that seafood is very prominent on the menu and is filled with specialities such as smoked salmon, shrimps, caviar, monkfish, steamed mussels, oyster beignets, etc.

Popular both with the locals and tourists alike, the menu itself changes daily with what produce is available, so there is always going to be something different to tempt your taste buds, plus there are set menu options, an A la Carte menu and there are always daily specials written on the blackboard.

Obviously because Fish la Boissonnerie is also like one of the wine bars in Paris as well, with the very extensive wine list comprising not just French wines, but wines from all over Europe and a vast range of the wines being served by the glass, plus the daily specials for a very reasonable cost, this is yet another reason why it is so popular.

From Fodor’s travel blog :

Owner Pierre Jancou painstakingly restored the Art Nouveau tiles of a shop that once sold exotic birds to create Paris’s most beautiful new bistro a vins. Dishes typical of the chalkboard menu here include foie gras with artichoke salad, and grilled hen wit baby organic vegetables. Pierre Jancou is alive and well, back in Paris, militant passion intact, doing what he does best: Offering the very best products, prepared ?sans chi chi,? (his words), and natural wines.
