Chez Haynes

Openend in 1949 by the famous actor, wrestler and cook Leroy Haynes, chez Haynes was the capital's first American restaurant.

He had many friends from both sides of the Atlantic, and his restaurant quickly became a favorite hangout for the local African American community and visiting celebrities. Jazz musicians, singers and dancers, Hollywood actors, all of them smiling and beautiful on the black and white pictures hanging from the walls, with little notes to Leroy scribbled in the corners. Great names from politics, cinema and sport (Jacques Chirac, Elisabeth Taylor, Miles Davies, Ronaldo and many more) have passed through the doors to taste traditional Louisiana cuisine. Haynes died but his wife Maria still runs the place.

With the kind of secretive look that makes you wonder if it's actually open, if you're welcome to step in or if maybe it's a private club. It stays a kind of monument, an experience rather than a must. It gives honest, simple American food.

There may be life jazz on Friday and Saterday. Every Sunday , Haynes brings a touch of Brazil to proceedings with féijoada, singing an dancing ... ambiance!
