The Jardin des Plantes has a huge collection of diverent plants from all over the world. The Jardin is a journey in itself.
The little Rock Garden does not immediately spring into view. The reason is because the delightful place is a sunken garden, located 3 meters below the terraced gardens in order to create hilly ground.
At the beginning of the thirties, the Museum botanists came up with the idea of presenting mountain plants in the heart of the capital. The ambition was to cultivate both mountain flora as well as plants from Mediterranean areas. Over just a few meters, temperatures can range from 15 to 20°C, what one would call a micro-climate. More than 2000 plants from all over the world cultivated on a few acres of rock garden with little streams running through it, appear to appreciate this sanctuary in the heart of Paris.
