Montmartre's La Fourmi Caf (74 rue des Martyrs, tel. 01 42 64 70 35) is all about the ambiance -- cheap, but not too dirty; trendy, but not too flashy; authentically Parisian, but not too snobby. It's a classic fixture of Montmartre that has thankfully not been discovered by the Am lie set. The mismatched tables and chairs are usually filled with the attractive, intellectual inhabitants of the neighborhood meeting for a leisurely drink. You won't get picked up, you won't be underdressed, and you won't feel like too much of a foreigner. The simple wood decor is enhanced by the constantly changing work of local artists; for the past three weeks, a series of the bartender's creations have been featured. And we must mention the price: 4.90 for a pint and a mere 1.40 for coffee, gruffly served to you by "le bar-man" .
