Anouschka has set up shop in her apartment (by appointment only, Monday to Saturday) and has rack upon rack of vintage clothing dating from the 1930s to the ’80s. It’s the perfect place to find a ’50s cocktail dress in mint condition or a mod jacket for him. A former model herself, she calls this a “designer laboratory,” and teams from top fashion houses often pop by looking for inspiration.

A retrospective exposition of the works of Jean-Paul Goude. This brilliant “image maker” was the man in the 80’s who made an icon of Grace Jones. He made Egoïste and Coco of Chanel hot. And who doesn’t remember his advertisements for Kodak, Citroën and Guerlain ! The exhibition shows photo’s, paintings, etc but also a “life” installation.

He calls his style “The French correction” with a lot of humor, a feeling for fashion and trendiness and not to forget his passion for exotic women.

Orphée et Eurydice brings flesh and blood to Gluck?s score and creates a permanent dialogue between song and dance dividing each of the main roles in two. Beyond the mythological tale itself, the ballet evokes the fragility of the human condition and plunges into painful introspection. The choreography of Pina Baush made this ballet worldknown.

Paris’s Best Oyster Bars

That was the headline of last Fodor’s travel news. Oysters are the perfect fast food ever. France is Europe’s top producer and mid-winter is the prime oyster-eating season, so here we go :

1/ Atao
Fashion stylist Laurence Mahéo took over her family?s oyster beds in Brittany after her father?s death and sold this succulent shellfish?rare plats, or flat, oysters to such famous chefs as Yannick Alleno at Le Meurice. Now she?s opened Atao, a hip little seafood house (86 rue Lemercier, 17e, 01-46-27-81-12), with a Japanese chef in the trendy Batignolles neighborhood. If oysters star, the menu also offers clams sautéed in sake, langoustines, fresh fish, and crepes for dessert.

2/Le Bar à Huitres
This mini-chain with four branches around the city (112 boulevard du Montparnasse, 14e, 01-43-20- 71-01; 33 boulevard Beaumarchais, 3e, 01-48-87-98-92; 33 rue Saint-Jacques, 5e, 01-44-07-27- 37; 69 avenue de Wagram, 17e, 01-43-80-63-54) was recently relaunched with stylish interiors and a terrific selection of pedigreed oysters, including Prat ar Coum from ostreiculteur Yvon Madec in Brittany and very rare oysters from the Etang de Diana in Corsica. Other good eats include cod with aioli and scallops cooked in their shells with pink Himalayan salt.

3/ L?Ecailler du Bistrot
It?s no surprise that the seafood sibling (22 Rue Paul Bert, 11e, 01-43-72-76-77) of the popular Le Paul Bert Bistro next door serves superb oysters, because the proprietor is Gwenaëlle Cadoret, the daughter of a famous oyster grower from Riec-sur-Belon in Brittany. The sole meunière is first-rate, too.

3/Garnier
Just across the street from Gare Saint Lazare and around the corner from the big department stores Printemps and Galeries Lafayette, this popular seafood brasserie (111 Rue St Lazare, 8e, 01-43-87-50-40) has a small, circular sit-down oyster bar just inside the front door that?s perfect for solo dining or a quick shopping-break lunch.

4/L? Huîtrier
Friendly Francisco Pires, the ecailleur (oyster shucker) who mans the stand at the excellent seafood house Lâ?? Huîtrier (16 Rue Saussier-Leroy, 17e, 01-40-54-83-44) won the annual competition for France?s best oyster shucker last year, so watch him at work before you settle down for an oyster feast. Other good dishes here include the stuffed clams and grilled sole.

5/ Huîtrerie Régis
It?s all about oysters at this chic elbow-to-elbow shop-front restaurant (3 Rue Montfaucon, 6e, 01-44-41-10-07) in Saint-Germain-des-Pres, where the bivalves come from the Marennes-Oléron and the only other edibles are boiled shrimp, fresh sea urchins, and clams. They pour a great list of Loire Valley white wines, and this place attracts a fashionable local crowd.

Discover a unique place conceived by the architect Odile Decq in the heart of the Palais Garnier. A mezzanine made of amazing shapes surrounds the original architecture of the Palais Garnier without ever touching it. The design is special, yet a big contrast with the classic Palais Garnier. But it matches, no doubt about that. The chef is Yann Tanneau who makes great dishes.

“We went to this restaurant a few days ago just for one course and came out with a big smile on our faces.

After we ordered our food we got an appetizer. It was a bisque of langoustine with whipped cream on it and ciboulette. It was exceptionally good and tasted like more.
The wine and the meal were very professionaly served. I had young leek with a poached egg and some really good sauces. My mother got scallops with an espuma. My father got carpaccio of langoustines with a fresh salad. I’m not really a fish eater but the dishes of my parents were really good but I loved my dish the most. I’m a vegetarian and my dish was like heaven for me.
When we went out I had a very big smile on my face and I was asking my parents to come back for a whole menu.”

When you like pizza, this is the place to be. Pizza di Loretta serves pizza by pieces. The price is charged by weight.Wines are good price/quality.

When you come in, the friendly and joyful staff asks you to make your choice. Eight or ten different kinds are begging to be chosen, they all look better than the other. You can eat in or take away. It’s simple but correct.

Last night we were offered some risotto croquette. Then the chef made some jokes(it was typical italian style). You can actually see the chef making the pizza’s.

When Gilles Choukroun started at Mini Palais we had great meals. Some months later we invited some friends : half of the platters where great, half of them where so-so.

Now he started up a new restaurant MBC (Mint-Basilicum-Coriander). It is said that his meals are great when he’s in the restaurant. Otherwise it’s as before. He’s a kind of adventurer and it’s always nice to try some of his new creations, so next time I will try to make a reservation. The interior seems rather daring modern chic. The service is very friendly.

With a women chef trained at the best cuisines in Paris, a husband from Hong Kong who is in charge of the drinks (mostly teas, but you also can get wine by the glass) it has to be a interesting place.

The food, a mix French-Chinese is of a high quality. Unfortunately it seems to take a lot of time in between two courses. We thought it was a good idea to try this rookie.

We did try to make a resevation but it was fully booked which is not a surprise when you only have 20 places. Hopefully next time we can book a table.

??If you are interested in old paintings, one exhibition not to be missed is the of Lucas Cranach. It is shown at the small and cosy Musée de Luxembourg. Be sure to buy your tickets in advance through internet or in a Fnac, otherwise you will need to queue for hours.

We loved the exhibition and the intention of it. The exhibition’s intention is a good one: to present Cranach’s work within an artistic and historical framework, exhibiting his work side by side with that of certain of his contemporaries, most notably Albrecht Dürer, as well as providing some enlightening explanation about the roles played by the many historical figures Cranach painted. It is clear and gives a nice idea of the art at that time. But I was most impressed with his nudes.

Here we can clearly see Cranach’s feminine ideal repeated over and over, most strikingly perhaps in the figure of Justice, an elegant figure, feline features, alabaster skin, the whole draped in an all but invisible gown of gossamer. Yes, she may be dripping with sensuality and her expression may be one of barefaced suggestiveness, but it’s alright because really she’s an allegory of Justice and she is wearing clothes !

Cranach at Musée du Luxembourg,,19 rue de Vaugirard, 75006 Paris, tel; 01 40 13 62 00; M° Mabillon or Saint-Sulpice

Last weekend we ate at Le comptoir and it was a real treat. They don’t take reservations, means or you queue or you eat rather early. We were seated between 18.30h and 19h.

The service was correct and friendly. We did choose from the menu on the blackboard. A wonderfull first course was a kind of soup from the south. As main course we took the rumsteak with vegetables. A little red wine made it a feast. The cheese platter was OK but not exceptional, but the dessert ( caramel with salt – icecream) was very very tasty. For this nice evening we did pay 128 Euro which is a fair price for the quality you get.

Next to Le comptoir you have the Avant Comptoir, a little bar to take a nice wine or apéritif and soms nibbles ( platter of freshly cut ham , njam ). They serve also sandwiches and pancakes. The sandwiches with ham and cheese are to die for. And the pancakes come with not so traditional ingredients. Next time we pass by, we will definitely jump in.

Text: Rooksana Hossenally for Vingt Paris
Needless to say that Paris doesn?t quite have a bustling nightlife to rival London or New York, but it does have its fair share of quirky and traditional bars, restaurants and cabarets, as well as a number of alternative arty music events in venues all over the city. Popular with the capital?s ?in? crowd, venues like La Bellevilloise and La Maroquinerie in the 20th, Point Ephémère in the 10th, Glaz?Art in the 19th and Mains d?Oeuvres at Porte de Saint-Ouen are experiencing a rise in popularity, and it?s not hard to see why. The events held at these venues often combine art and music in quirky unusual spaces that have quickly become the place to be seen, especially for those of you dying to be part of the Paris Boho scene!

Last but not least is a venue offering a mix of cultural events in the north of the city, in Porte de Saint-Ouen. A little out of the way, but worth the trip, Mains d?Oeuvres has become a respected venue hosting artistic events from more of a serious angle. Opened in 2001, in an area that desperately needed a cultural centre, it was founded by a collective of experienced professionals (including one of the co-founders of Point Ephémère). The Mains d?Oeuvres association acts as a link between art and the community. With its 4000m2 space, this venue is one of the largest of its kind in Paris. What do they do with all that space? Well, it?s quite simple: they do everything. From concerts to artist residencies, exhibitions to conferences, festivals, a restaurant?you name it, they do it!

An eclectic mix of events, the space is popular with those who know it, but the real downside is its location, meaning that it is still relatively unheard of to the lay person; your average cultural friend will have heard of it, but venturing out to Porte de Saint-Ouen may be a bit of a stretch for many. Mains d?Oeuvres is however worth the extra time on the metro, so do cast the laziness aside and make a day of it!

Mains d’Oeuvres, 1, Rue Charles Garnier, 93400 Saint-Ouen, tel. 01 40 11 25 25, M° Garibaldi

A little out of the way, further northeast near the Villette cultural complex, Glaz?Art is at your service with a varied program of concerts, a bar, an exhibition space, an exterior terrace and even a beach in summer! Don?t be fooled by the venue?s non-descript building that melts into a landscape of motorways and bus depots, as the easily overlooked concrete walls that hide an array of cultural happenings that are well worth dropping by for. Glaz?Art is one of the city?s most low-key places with some surprisingly big names gracing the stage, ranging from hip hop to punk, so if you are particular about the music you like to listen to, do look up what?s on before heading down.

The intimate gig space is hinged to the exhibition space that meanders around the building to its exterior terrace, by the Glaz?Art bar. Most people tend to be there to see a band rather than just to hang out ,as in the other places mentioned above. The venue opened 15 years ago, with the aim of being an atypical music base, which it has succeeded in doing judging by its storming success. Unlike the other venues, Glaz?Art hosts a series of free concerts in partnership with Radio Neo, which signals its open, community-focused spirit.

Glaz’Art, 7, Av. Porte de la Vilette, 75019 Paris, tel. 01 40 36 55 65, M° Porte de la Vilette
